New containment class for 44 tonnes proposed at CEN TC 226 meeting



A proposal has been presented to CEN TC 226 Plenary by the French delegation concerning the possibilty of creating a new containment class for 44 tonne trucks.  This is in response of the decision of the French Minisrty of Transport to allow for an increase in the maximum permissible weight of 5 axle Heavy Good Vehciles from 40 to 44 tonnes as of 1 January 2013.  


Given that, according ton the EN 1317, road restraints systems are tested up to a maximum of 38 tonnes, road safety experts fear that the introduction of heavier trucks may represent a road safety hazard.
